"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Enough is enough

Getting through to an adult child that it is time to leave the nest and make your own way in this world is never an easy thing to do. In my case, the adult child is my grandson who appears to have settled quite comfortably into a quagmire of lethargy. Thank you very much.

Proverbial ‘hints’ have been scattered at his feet, but he only walks across them like a coat that has been thrown over a puddle so as not to get his feet wet. And after nearly a year of settling down and in, it’s time for a brick.

It is not healthy to play video games all night and day. It is not healthy to never go anywhere except to a fast food joint. It is not healthy to have no interaction with the outside world, except through cellular lines, and to order a Big Mac. It is not healthy to not have a goal, an ambition. Not healthy to sleep half the day and stay awake half the night talking to and playing games with another of your own ‘kind’.

How many times must a caregiver say, “You need to find work so you can get your own place and take responsibility for yourself?” How many excuses must a caregiver swallow before choking-fits ensue?

Yes, he is in school but he is floundering without direction, though to hear him tell it, he is right on track.

He tells me I am not living in this century and that people don’t go out anymore to ‘look’ for work, and to leave him alone as I don’t see that he fills out applications ‘on-line’. Asked does he follow-up with a call, I get, sarcastically, “Oh, what do I say, did you get my application?”

My stress level is peaking. I am tired, and I resent being put in this position. Today the shit is going to hit the fan! It’s ultimatum time.
