"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Three Stars

Brandon Mull writes fantasy for young adults, and while the tales told could be frightening to children, as an adult reader, the fare is light and tasty. I had fun with this one. Easy reading.

13-year-old Jason involuntarily transports to Lyrian, a world ruled by an evil wizard, Emperor King Maldor. Only one thing can bring the Emperor down ….. a word. Jason, along with Rachel who is also a Beyonder, called thus because they are from Earth, set out on a quest to find all the syllables that make up the word, hoping that in so doing, they will find their way home.

This is clearly written for the pre-teen, however, any adult who finds himself within the boundaries of Brandon Mull’s world, will certainly find that he is who he says he is.
