"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Journal entry

This past week has been one heck of a ride, I tell you. The coast of Oregon was pummeled with hurricane force winds and rain that blew the lid off some of the, otherwise, acquiescent towns along the coast. We had some damage but nothing compared to north of us where the river rushed over the banks in Mapleton, causing the towns people  (all 1000 of them) to evacuate into Florence.

Today we took a walk around the neighborhood while the rain caught it's breath, and we saw a lot of roofs missing their tiles. Needless to say that the only roofer in our town is a happy camper right about now.

This photograph, of the Tillamook Head Lighthouse, was taken by Justin Larson during the storm.
