| Ursid meteor shower |
Tonight is the winter solstice — and we are in for a magical treat! Tonight, the full moon (cold moon) will be totally eclipsed when the moon passes directly through the shadow of the Earth. The last winter solstice associated with a total eclipse of a full moon was in 1638, and won‘t happen again until 2094!
And, if that isn’t enough of a mind bender for you, this one will be topped off by the Ursid meteor shower with about 15 to 25 meteors visible per hour. This extravaganza is rare, and because tonight’s sky is exceptionally dark, the midnight showing will be extraordinary.
I do hope you arrive early, get a good front row seat and enjoy the show. Show-times in the USA: 11:41 pm December 20 - PST; and 2:41 am December 21 - EST. The entire eclipse will take 3.5 hours.
