"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Percolations

I do believe it is time for a percolation.
Yes?

I came across this book of five detective stories with an all-insect cast of characters, and immediately thought, 'This one is going to be delicious.' Then, of course, I began my research into the author, William Kotzwinkle, whom I’d never heard hide nor hair (or is it hare)? Oh bother and fiddle-li-dee.

Inspector Mantis and Doctor Hopper, oddly resembling a Holmesian pastiche, solve entomological cases, in Victorian Bugland, with clever sleuthing. Added to the cast of characters, a bevy of buggy bandits.

Yes indeed, this one is going to be delectable!

William Kotzwinkle, born 1943 (1938 in some records) in Scranton, Pennsylvania, has received several literary awards along with the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel for Doctor Rat in 1977.

He also wrote the novelization of the original screenplay by Melissa Mathison, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. Who knew?
