"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."

teetering at Four stars....but a solid three
Ok. All right. So I spoke too soon regarding the juvenility of Fablehaven. By the time I finished with Book two, I was actually looking forward to book three. Yes, this story is for young readers, and I would post a four star rating were I in the nine to twelve age bracket, as I said before, but, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, I actually found myself inside the gates of Fablehaven rooting for all the good guys.
The storyline is still a bit transparent for the adult reader, but I found myself NOT second guessing the telling and just enjoying the ride. It made all the difference in the liking.
I would recommend this series as a read-out-loud to the younger set. The ones who don’t traumatize easily because there are some sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat scenes that could cause nightmares (not for the more mature reader, of course). The pacing is just right for a middle-grade reader.
If you love fantasy and magic and faeries and mystical things… and can get past yourself along the trail, you’re going to enjoy these books! It took me to the middle of book two to get past myself, so be patient.
In book two, Kendra and Seth are thrown back into the world of Fablehaven as they are tricked into helping the evil Society of the Evening Star.
‘I am looking forward to continuing my journey into the third installment: Grip of the Shadow Plague…where,’ she says sotto voce while looking around, ‘I read, in a few spoilers, that Dragons abound.’ shhh.
