"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Three Stars

A few days ago, or maybe it was weeks (there is no time where I live), Gina suggested I read a Novel by James L. Rubart called ROOMS. The book would not Google so I went to my trustworthy site, Amazon. There it was so into my Cart it went.

I usually don’t buy a book without knowing what it’s about but since Gina put it in front of me, so to speak, and Amazon’s short description gave the impression that it was a supernatural thriller, I didn’t hesitate. Also, the story takes place in Cannon Beach, Oregon ~ so, how could I resist?

Well, suffice it to say ROOMS is indeed a thriller and a tad supernatural. The basic premise is a shape-shifting mysterious house that becomes a physical manifestation of Micah Taylor‘s soul. God, through the rooms in this house and 'letters' from the great-uncle who gave him the house, forces Micah to face himself and make a choice.

I found the characters a bit too faith-obsessive for my taste. This is a Christian fiction novel that beats you over the head with Scripture and the author’s own interpretation of that Scripture (no matter how good an interpretation may be, it is still subject to all the limitations, doubts and errors that humans are prone to). So, having said this, I kept reading, and to my surprise, the pages were flying through my hands. Once I got past the author’s theological bias, I started paying attention to the message, and even though it was predictable, I was more than happy to be reminded that the only true journey in this life is the one that leads to the King.

This could have been a solid four star fiction were it not for the interjected Bible beliefs of the author, and the much too many Scripture references.

Make your choices wisely my friends, as the freedom of serenity is truly the best revenge.
