"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Mis-Adventure

Stephen and I went to the beach with Ozzy this morning. It was cold and the wind was numbing as the swelling ocean furiously beat against the Jetty and agitated the Oyster Beds in its wake.

We walked along the white sands in search of shells and Driftwood to add to the collection already peppering the yard at home while Oz ran in and out of the Dunes, looking back from time to time to make sure we were still following.

We were there for about half an hour and had already walked at least two miles when Stephen said his face felt sedated against the cold wind, and in agreement, we decided to turn around and head back.

I made the mistake of jogging along the shoreline where the water was moving further inland with every surging pulse, and where Oz thought I wanted to play. Stephen was busy writing in his Blackberry so even he didn’t notice Ozzy running up behind me at a pretty good clip. I didn’t see him, that is, until he ran around and blocked my path. At which time, I fell over all 125 pounds of him, and landed in the shallow freezing water, face down. Stephen ran up to block Oz from jumping on the ‘beached whale’ as I pulled my limp self to my feet.

My camera had fallen out of my pocket and onto the wet sand, and all I could do was lament the lost photos. But, lo and behold when we got home, somehow I was able to extract the remembrance of the day from the Memory Chip, and into my computer. Too bad the camera was in my pocket when I took a tumble as wouldn’t a picture of me flat, covered in sand and water have been a sight to see?! Yeah right, too bad……
