"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Percolations

The Man in the Picture is a tale told in recollections.
When I first heard of this novella, I thought,
‘homage pastiche for Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray?’

Susan Hill, who lives in Gloucestershire, and runs her own small publishing firm, is a newbie to me. Prior to catching sight of her on someone’s bookish blog, I had no clue of her standing as a writer.

Tomorrow, upon receipt of her 2007 book, I will most assuredly find out about Ms. Susan Hill.....

humph….
