"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

The Magic Thief by Sarah Prineas (** ½ stars)

A pick-pocket picks the wrong pocket and finds himself with a wizard’s magic stone.
Instead of killing him, the stone leads him into a world of magic as the boy becomes the Wizard’s Apprentice, ultimately in an effort to save the city from the bad guy who is stealing all the magic.

It was an interesting read in that there were two first person renderings. I’ve never read a book with a first person account given by two protagonists. So, in that regard the writer did a good job, however, the characters seemed stale and flat to me, and the plot didn’t get under way until well into the second half of the book, and then it was predicable at best. First person narratives by the boy Connwaer, and the Wizard Nevery were instrumentally written.

A Trilogy I have no interest in continuing.
Fun book for ages 12 and under.
