Elvis Cole and Joe Pike arrived on Monday and, as in every other time they come to call, our visit was much too brief. Seam-less and without effort, Cole and Pike kill people. This time, during their short visit, they took me for a ride through the streets of Santa Monica to Venice Beach then to Mulholland Drive and back again to the Canyon. The Canyon, where it begins and where it ends.
Pike offers protection to a man he doesn‘t know. Protection the man doesn’t want and neither do the federal agents mysteriously watching him. Saving the man from a beating was just the first falling domino. Slowly, one by one, the row of dominoes begins to tumble in an escalating pitch. And orchestrating every note, behind the scenes, is Daniel, the relentless assassin.
Flawless in its momentum, even the bad guy is saturated and dripping in character. Brilliant dialogue and a heart skipping plot. Intense. Fast and furious. Robert Crais weaves a tight yarn leaving everything to the imagination, and nothing as it seems.
