"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Although October has not yet completed her reign for this year, I miss her already. Every year she brings us bountiful days filled with large orange pumpkins, majestic yellow corn, vibrant hues splashed across the countryside, and white mist crawling along the mountains and hovering over the waters.

She shadows our days with the smell of burning leaves, keeping at bay as best she can:  ice, cold wind, rain, and fog. With promises, she begs them aside to wait patiently for King Winter, who is not far behind.

Soon, too soon, October will toss her long auburn hair, make one last sweep of the land, and release the King’s greeters to light her way into Hallows’ Eve where, with a sigh of regret, she will slowly turn, survey her duty well done, and give us a curtsy until next year.

I will miss you my Queen
