"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Last week, the variegated meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum - aka Dragonfly) invaded the coast of Oregon. The spousal unit mentioned, in passing, that he had seen them in mass-flight in our very neighborhood. I, of course, saw nothing (I miss all the good stuff), and was somewhat skeptical, so having piqued my curiosity, I did a little research and found that the Dragonfly does indeed assault the coastal towns of Oregon in August or September.

Numerous mysteries surround this particular dragonfly, and no one, including scientists, seem to know why they show up in this location in such great numbers. Only that this time of year, every year, they come in mass.

Did you know that Dragonflies are magical creatures, associated with wisdom, dreams, change and enlightenment? And, did you know that they have been on our planet some 300 million years, and spend most of their life as a nymph under water before exiting the cocoon to fly? Fascinating.

I took these photographs of a Dragonfly in blue iridescence,
during the month of June when the spousal unit and I went to Eel Lake.
I tried to capture a shot of it in-flight but it was too quick for me.
Wonder I got anything of it at all.
