"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

The Stellars have company

In the days surrounding Thanksgiving of 2009, something unusual happened to the Sea Lions on Pier 39 in San Francisco, California.
They disappeared.

I read about this phenomenon in November, and remember making a comment to Veronica that they probably came up to the Sea Lion Caves, in Haceta Head, Oregon. Veronica, of course, poo-pawed that notion. Well, as it turns out, I was right. Of the 1700 that made the San Francisco docks their home, only 20 Sea Lions stayed behind. The others swam the 500 mile journey north, where, in December, they started showing up by the hundreds.

San Francisco dock at Pier 39, must assuredly be eerie now as after decades of echoing-barks through the foggy bay, it has fallen atypically silent.

The Sea Lions appear to have made the journey because of the abundance of anchovies; so plentiful, in fact, that even the pelicans are hanging around.

Excuse me but how did the Sea Lions know about the anchovies?
Keith says they must have gotten a Text.
