"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

Moving on

*

Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you would have only turned left or right, instead of staying the course? Oh, but certainly you have. We all have, otherwise we wouldn’t have that Genetic Marker that makes us human. We are all human, aren’t we? I mean, sometimes I wonder. Oh, but not about you of course, though sometimes...... well, there have been those moments when I thought........... well, no. Let’s just leave this for another post, shall we?

Ok then. Back to what I was saying: we’re moving along on our journey and all of a sudden the path we’ve chosen comes to a crossroad.

Some of us stop and actually think things through at this point. If I choose to turn right or left, I may have a better life. But then will I have to start over? Do I want to start over? Will it be worth the sacrifice? If I choose to turn right or left, will I jump to the head of the line? Does it even matter if I ever get to the head of the line? Maybe that road will be harder to travel. Maybe that road leads to a dead-end. Then what? No, I’ll just stay the course. After all, I’ve already paid my dues. I’ve already gone through Customs. Do I really want to subject myself to the scrutiny all over again?

Do I play it safe and go straight or do I take a risk and make a turn?

Some of us don’t even stop at that crossroad. We just keep going without even hesitating. We don’t consider consequences because we aren’t thinking. For the moment we are in a Tunnel and our eyes see only what our mind tells them to see. But the fact is, whether we know it or not, we choose regardless. The decision to turn or stay the course may not be a conscious one, for some, but it is a choice nonetheless.

Where we choose to go in our lives, what we choose to do, affects others. We are not Islands in the middle of a stream, so look and think carefully before moving on.

“We can believe what we choose. We are answerable for what we choose to believe.”
Ven. John Henry Newman (1801-1890)
Cardinal-Deacon of St. George in Velabro
