"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

I'm just sayin'

I’ve been noticing, in the last few months, that as we age, we tend to fall back into our old way of life. At a certain point, we can no longer keep up the façade, and slowly; complacently, we fall back into our comfort zone, be it good or bad.

We are who we are. Oh, we modify our behavior usually to please someone else, but as we grow old or older, whatever the case, the created layer separating the original self from the modified self begins to wear thin until it shreds, then the true self begins to emerge again. Inevitable.

We don’t change. We tend to adapt until it no longer suits our needs, or until we have been worn so thin that we invariably lose our balance and quietly slip back into what comes easy. We slip back into ourselves.

There is an old saying by young people who are looking for a life-mate, something to the effect of: ‘look at the intended’s mother or father if you want to know who your partner really is.’ Gee, I wonder why……….
