"For us, our house is not insentient matter—it has a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals, and solicitudes, and deep sympathies; it is of us, and we are in its confidence, and live in its grace and in the peace of its benediction. We never come home from an absence that its face does not light up and speak out its eloquent welcome—and we can not enter it unmoved."
—Mark Twain, 1896

If there are no dogs in heaven I'm not going…..

Oz is not a dog. To us Ozzy is the son we never had, a friend who never judges. He comforts us when we are sad, and watches our every move when we are not feeling well. When we are not paying attention to him, he barks and jumps until we stop what we’re doing.

Ozzy is a good boy. He speaks a language that only the three of us understand: with his eyes and his thoughts he imparts his wisdom. We are in harmony. He makes us laugh. He understands our words and we understand his. He is astute and intelligent. He loves us no matter what we do, with unconditional devotion. He is uncomplicated. Straightforward.

All any animal wants is to be loved. But that is not a prerequisite to their loving us. Even if we are indifferent they love us. They see what we do not. And they wait patiently for as long as it takes until we see it too. If only everyone could see through the muck and mire just long enough to see the gift that waits in the love we give.

In memory of Queenie, Annie, Jack, and La Tonta.........and all the other 'friends' that made us just a little bit better for having known them.
